The primary focus of The Sun Will Rise Foundation is to provide free peer grief support for those who have experienced the devastating death of someone they care about due to causes related to substance use. They offer care, compassion, community, understanding and support to those experiencing the unique challenges and feelings that surround these types of losses.

Robyn Houston-Bean, partner at Houston Insurance, experienced the heartbreaking loss of her 20-year-old son Nick to an accidental polysubstance overdose in 2015. In the depths of her sorrow, she found solace by participating in grief support groups in the Boston area. As the months went by, she made connections with other bereaved mothers and the fog of grief began to lift.

From sorrow to purpose

Houston-Bean discovered that helping others in similar situations helped her heal. She decided to start her own grief support group in Braintree, naming it “The Sun Will Rise” after a passage found in Nick’s recovery journal. “When someone dies because of substance use, the bereaved may feel judged and alone,” Houston-Bean explained. “We want to let people who have lost someone due to substance use know that there are others who understand and support them.”

– Robyn Houston-Bean, partner at Houston Insurance and president of The Sun Will Rise Foundation

From a single grief support group, the foundation has grown to offer over 30 monthly peer grief support meetings, both in-person and online. Facilitated by volunteers who have personally experienced the loss of a loved one due to substance use, these meetings provide a safe space for individuals to share their stories and receive support.

The foundation is also dedicated to education, awareness and prevention. Partnerships and collaborations with other like-minded organizations have amplified their efforts to reach more people in need and erase the stigma surrounding substance use-related deaths.

Year-round care, compassion and community

As a small family-owned agency, Houston Insurance wholeheartedly supports The Sun Will Rise Foundation as a natural extension of their values. Throughout the year, Houston Insurance encourages employees to pursue personal volunteer efforts, offering paid time off to leverage their unique skills for the nonprofit’s benefit.

This comprehensive approach, encompassing volunteerism, in-kind services, ongoing donations and awareness initiatives, demonstrates the agency’s commitment to providing sustained and holistic support to the bereaved.

Thanks to the commitment of Houston Insurance, The Sun Will Rise Foundation helps the bereaved find ‘their people,’ the ones who understand like no other.”

– Leslie Lagos, director, The Sun Will Rise Foundation
