Creating lasting change through partnerships

When women work together, transformative things happen. The Women’s Service League of North Central Washington (WSL) is a group of about 200 women of diverse ages who come together to serve others. Part of its mission is to provide lasting support to women and children in their community who are experiencing homelessness. But they do so much more.

Combining educational and charitable initiatives, the nonprofit helps collect diapers, wipes and formula to share with mothers who need them. They also collect clothing, jewelry, purses, shoes and accessories for women to use for work or job interviews, along with donating hot meals for families and winter coats for kids in need. They even work to source formal dresses so that any high school student who needs a dress for prom can get one free of charge.

As true believers in the power of collaboration, part of the money WSL raises is used for grants that are distributed to other local organizations serving those in need as well as provide funding for scholarships for women to attend college.

Inspiring volunteers for life

WSL serves another critical purpose — promoting volunteerism. Through its member programs, WSL trains women to take on leadership roles within the organization as well as the greater community. In the process, they build community, foster friendships, promote personal growth and help members gain valuable service experience. And since the organization works with women of all ages, it ensures continuity and weaves a tighter web of support for everyone.

A platform for good

Erica Mendoza joined WSL in 2014 and currently serves on its board and several committees. When she founded Mendoza Insurance Services in 2021, she decided to use her platform as a small business owner to further WSL’s mission.

She and her employees help in a variety of ways. They volunteer at the nonprofit’s numerous annual events and consistently donate their time and talents each month. In addition, the agency’s office serves as a secure drop-off point for donations of clothing for women, winter coats for kids, and diapers, toiletries and other necessities for women and families who need them. Mendoza also uses her business contacts to encourage others to support WSL’s programs.
